Biography

Aslan Bzhaniya

Born on April 6, 1963, in the village of Tamysh, Ochamchira District, in a family of teachers.

In 1980, he graduated from the Tamysh High School and enrolled in the Frunze Polytechnic Institute to study civil engineering.

In 1982, he changed universities and in 1985, graduated from the Moscow State Automobile and Road University of Technology.

From 1985 to 1986, he worked on distribution in the Capital Construction Department of the Ugran timber industry enterprise of the Smolensk region.

From 1987 to 1989, he worked as an instructor, head of the department of the Ochamchira District committee of the Komsomol.

In 1991, he graduated from the Higher Courses of the KGB of the USSR.

From 1991 to 1992, he worked in the KGB of Abkhazia.

During the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia of 1992-1993, he served in the state security bodies of Abkhazia in the city of Gudauta.

In December 1999, he was transferred to the reserve of the State Security Service of the Republic of Abkhazia.

In 1999, he graduated from the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation.

From December 1999 to December 2008, he was engaged in entrepreneurial activities in the Russian Federation.

In January 2009, he was appointed Economic Advisor to the Embassy of Abkhazia in Russia.

In February 2010, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia S. Bagapsh, he was appointed Chairman of the State Security Service of the Republic of Abkhazia.

In May 2014, by Decree of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia A. Ankvab, he was awarded the title of Major General.

In June 2014, by Decree of the President of the Russian Federation V. Putin, he was awarded the Order of Friendship for providing assistance in ensuring security during the preparation and holding of the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

In August 2014, he was a candidate for President of the Republic of Abkhazia in early elections, receiving more than 35% of the vote.

Since April 2015 - President of the Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Research “APRA”.

Since July 2015 - Co-chairman of the block of opposition forces of the Republic of Abkhazia.

In March 2017, he was elected as a member of the People’s Assembly-Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia of the VI convocation (2017-2022).

On March 22, 2020, he was elected President of the Republic of Abkhazia with 56.5% of the votes.

On April 23, 2020, he took office as President of the Republic of Abkhazia.

Married, father of two children.
