On October 30, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba gave a speech at a festive meeting dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia.
Dear academics! Dear representatives of the public and the academic circles! Dear guests!
Allow me to sincerely congratulate you on this wonderful anniversary – 20 years since the establishment of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia, and to wish you strong health and new creative achievements!
Despite big economic difficulties that created obstacles for the development of our science, its achievements in different fields are obvious. The research of our scientists in humanitarian, scientific, exact, technical, medical and other branches of science are praised not only in our country but also far beyond its borders.
An outstanding statesman, founder of the modern independent Abkhazian state, academic Vladislav Ardzinba and his supporters, who were outstanding academics, stood at the foundation of the national Academy. The First President was deeply aware of the significant role of science and education in state-building and the formation of the foundations of national ideology. Time and the experience of our development showed that decisions made in that difficult period were right and timely.
It should be noted that the interaction of our academics with their colleagues from countries of the near and far-abroad did not stop even during the years of the Georgian-Abkhazian war and in the difficult post-war period of the blockade. Today, the Abkhazian science confidently embarks on a path of its rebirth and development.
We are grateful to the famous academics who represent the academic circles of Russia and other states, who found the time and opportunity to participate in the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of our Academy.
We are rightfully proud of the fact that for decades, outstanding Abkhazian academics laid a solid foundation for a range of important research projects. We are glad to see that a new and well-trained generation of academics comes to replace our senior highly-qualified and recognised specialists.
First steps have been made to introduce a grant system to award the most important scientific research projects and inventions. Measures have been taken to preserve and revive the scientific potential and research capabilities of institutions that are part of the system of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia.
I am certain that with the improvement of the economic situation in the country, our national Academy and its subordinate research institutions will receive the necessary state support for a significant improvement in their material and technical conditions.
We are also inspired by the emergent tendency of strengthening scientific-educational and scientific-technical contacts with our ally and strategic partner – the Russian Federation, in accordance with the provisions of the new effective Treaty.
I think that it is very important and useful that our outstanding academics and representatives of academic circles participate in the work of Russian-Abkhazian economic forums, scientific conferences, symposia and joint expeditions. Anniversary celebrations and meetings that took place recently on account of the anniversary of the Abkhazian State University and the Sukhum Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy, the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of Abkhazia and other scientific centres have clearly demonstrated the value and the necessity of comprehensive interaction between the academics who research not only sectoral, but also global international problems the importance of which grows in our era.
In my opinion, it is important to use sensibly and effectively the opportunities provided by the Russian Federation and its federal subjects, in order to give advanced training to our young specialists in graduate schools, master’s and bachelor’s degree programs at major Russian and other international research and educational centres and universities.
I would like to point out once again that the state hopes to see research on subjects that would serve to strengthen our economic, ecological and demographic security.
We highly value the work of our institutions and academics who worked on problems of history and language during the Soviet years and in the post-war period. These are the people who stood at the origins of the national movement of liberation. Yet, we must all understand that it is necessary to develop other fields, to seriously approach the issues of the exact sciences - medicine, economics, and all others that would contribute to an increase in our budget and our opportunities, and would create a better social foundation for our state.
Abkhazian Studies and Caucasus Studies occupy a significant place in academic research conducted by the academic institutions of the state. I am certain that these disciplines that study deeply our historical identity, traditional culture and worldview will continue to be constantly supervised by the state institutions.
Dear academics! Dear guests!
I would like to wish you once again strong health, new academic achievements for the benefit of our country’s academic growth and for the prosperity of our Homeland!
