On October 6, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba made a congratulatory speech at a festive event dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the city of Gagra and the Gagra District.
As you know, there are many significant dates related to the main periods and stages of the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia. Yet, the day of the liberation of Gagra and the Gagra District has a special place among them, since the successful Gagra offensive of 1992 opened the way to the final expulsion of the Georgian aggressors from the territory of the Republic of Abkhazia. This victory inspired the people and our army to take decisive steps, it helped to mobilise internally and to acquire combat experience of professional conduct of contact fights. It had not only a military but also a moral and political significance because it helped to tear through the blockade ring. This allowed us to solve important and vital questions.
The deep and comprehensive plan to liberate the Gagra District, which was strategically important to the entire Republic, was approved by Chairman of the State Defence Committee, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia Vladislav Ardzinba. According to this plan, our famous military leaders Sultan Sosnaliyev, Sergei Dbar, and the famous warrior and commander Mukhamed Kilba assigned specific tasks to all commanders and subunits, clearly defining the tactics of their interaction.
The Gagra operation, which started on October 1 and ended on October 6, clearly demonstrated the high military spirit, the unity of our fighters, and the consistency and the well-run operation of our field commanders. A great role in the liberation of Gagra was played by volunteers from the North Caucasus and the South of Russia, and the representatives of our foreign Abkhazian diaspora.
In this carefully prepared offensive operation, our combat units were confronted by more than four thousand soldiers of the Georgian army, supported by 40 armoured vehicles, artillery, and aircraft. However, the enemy’s superior forces did not resist the powerful onslaught and selflessness of the glorious defenders of our Fatherland. The enemy fled in panic, abandoning equipment and weapons.
Today we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the liberation of Gagra as a national holiday. During this time, the Gagra district has significantly changed, the wounds inflicted by the war are healed, the famous resort and tourist sites are being restored, and the city is confidently starting a peaceful and creative stage.
In these festive days, we bow our heads before the memory of the brave defenders of the Motherland! Eternal memory to the heroes who laid their lives on the altar of sacred victory! A huge gratitude to mothers and fathers, who survived the severe trials, the bitterness of heavy losses, suffering and hardships!
Dear citizens of Gagra! I sincerely congratulate you on this holiday! I wish you happiness, prosperity, a peaceful and clear sky above your heads!
