In his speech, the Head of State commented on the high importance of this event for the history of Abkhazia and the friendly ties between Syria and Abkhazia:
“The opening of the monument to Walid Marshan, whose name is not to be forgotten, is an outstanding event in the history of Abkhazia and the history of friendly ties between Syria and Abkhazia.
In the memory of our people, Walid Marshan Abaza will remain a hero who always cared about the fate of his Homeland Abkhazia. He fought for its freedom and independence and was a great patriot who always defended the truth.
In the times when the Syrian Arab Republic was in danger, Walid fought against the aggressors without hesitation. He participated in military combat even in young age. His achievements and experience made him Deputy Head of the Syrian Security Service. He also carried out other important state tasks. The last years of his life were dedicated to resisting the forces of international terrorism that tried to destroy Syria as a state. It is necessary to comment on the fearlessness with which the Marshan brothers defended Syria. The name of the General, Squadron Commander Mamdukh Marshan Abaza is inscribed in golden letters in the military history of Syria.
The achievements of Sharaf Marshan who lives in Abkhazia today are also well-known, as is the fact that the sons and the entire family of Walid Marshan enjoy great honour and respect in Syria.
It is important to us that the Abkhazian and Adyghe people living in Syria have made their own significant contribution to the defence of the Syrian sovereignty.
It is heroes like Walid Marshan and the unity of our diaspora in Syria that have contributed to the fact that Syria has made strong-willed diplomatic steps to recognise the independence of Abkhazia. The recognition of the Republic of Abkhazia, which was a great achievement that was reached by Moscow, Damascus and Sukhum, became a great victory for our people. You know well that Georgia tried to hinder this process. Yet, the process of the international recognition of the independence of Abkhazia is gaining strength, and it cannot be stopped by anybody anymore. Needless to say, Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin played a special role in this process.
I remember well our meetings and conversations with Walid Marshan and his valuable advice.
Eternal memory to an outstanding son of Abkhazia Walid Marshan Abaza!”
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Abkhazia Aleksey Dvinyanin also gave a speech at the ceremony.
“Thank you for inviting me to the opening of the monument to General Walid Marshan Abaza, an outstanding military commander of the Syrian Arab Republic and a worthy son of the Abkhazian-Abaza people. I know that Walid Marshan provided invaluable support to the people of the Republic of Abkhazia in the years of the Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia of 1992-1993. Certainly, General Walid Marshan made a great contribution to the achievement of Syrian independence. You know that today as well, the Syrian Arab Republic continues fighting against international terrorism and extremism. Without a doubt, the achievements of the people of any nationality, in this case, a worthy son of the Abkhazian people, are received with deep respect and dignity.
General Marshan made a great contribution to a prolonged process of the recognition of the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia by the Syrian Arab Republic with assistance from the Russian Federation. This also deserves our great respect”, - remarked Aleksey Dvinyanin.
On behalf of his family, Sharaf Marshan thanked everyone who contributed to the opening of the monument to General Walid Marshan.
“Today I feel joy and sorrow at the same time. I grieve deeply about the loss of the dearest person in my life – my brother and ally. At the same time, I find solace when I think about my dear brother and the memory that he left in the hearts of his brothers and friends. His love and loyalty to the Homeland, his humanitarian spirit, his famous bravery, which is known by everybody who knew the hero Walid, have remained. In Syria, Walid’s heroism became an example of heroism to the young generation.
Today in the Republic of Abkhazia, an excellent initiative has emerged to install a monument to Walid Marshan Abaza in his historic Homeland.
I hope that when young people come to this monument, they will feel in their hearts a bit of bravery, heroism and love of Homeland that Walid had”, - said Sharaf Marshan.
