On September 27, on the Day of the liberation of Sukhum, a ceremony of laying flowers at the Memorial in the Park of Military Glory took place.
The elected Vice-President Aslan Bartsits, Prime Minister Valeriy Bganba, First Deputy Head of the Administration of the President Dmitry Shamba, members of Parliament, government officials, heads and participants of veteran and social organisations participated in the ceremony.
On September 16, 1993, a decisive offensive operation of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Abkhazia to liberate the capital of Abkhazia, Sukhum, took place. About one o’clock in the afternoon, the Gumista River was boosted in the area of the lower bridge. At the same time, the expansion of the foothold for attacking Sukhum from the north took place. The strategy of war command consisted of surrounding the city from both sides. The operation to liberate Sukhum from the armed forces of the State Council of Georgia lasted for 11 days. It was headed by the Minister of Defence, major general Sultan Sosnaliyev and head of the General Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Abkhazia, major general Sergey Dbar. On September 27, 1993, Abkhazian troops, having overcome the enemy resistance, liberated Sukhum.
