On September 4, a meeting between President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba and President of the Syrian Arab Republic Bashar Assad took place.
Bashar Assad greeted Raul Khadzhimba.
“I would like to welcome you and your delegation once again. The delegation includes the representatives of all the spheres that could help us create a strong foundation for the start of our relations.
We would like to congratulate you on the tenth anniversary of the recognition of the independence of Abkhazia. We would like to fill our relations with social, economic and cultural content.
Representatives of different nationalities live in our countries. Representatives of your diaspora also live in Syria. The agreements that we have signed will be an important step in our relations.
Once again I am welcoming you and your delegation”, - said Bashar Assad, in particular (as translated).
Raul Khadzhimba thanked the President of Syria for the invitation:
“Thank you, Mr. President, it is an event of historic significance. Here today, there is an official delegation from Abkhazia with a visit following the diplomatic recognition on the part of Syria. I am sincerely grateful to you for the invitation and the opportunity to meet with you and your colleagues.
The decision about the recognition was a brave action on the part of the Syrian Arab Republic, a brave step from the leadership of Syria.
These days, as we have discussed with you, the USA and the West do everything to antagonise Syria.
The history of our relations goes back for centuries. The nineteenth century is a period when the Adyghe and Abkhazian people happened to be on territory of Syria by the will of fate. It is important to us that today, they are with you, with the government forces, that they support the power that was legally elected by the people of Syria.
Today we are signing the framework Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation, as well as other documents that will allow us to develop mutually beneficial relations and strengthen the normative and legal base of our cooperation”, - said the Head of State.
An extended meeting between the Heads of State also took place as part of the official visit.
