On April 5, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba had a meeting with the great-granddaughter of the writer Maxim Gorky Yekaterina Peshkova and the participants of the jubilee events on the occasion of the writer’s 150th birthday.
Raul Khadzhimba remarked that in Abkhazia, everyone knows well the works of Maxim Gorky and that they are happy to welcome his relatives in this country.
“I am happy to see you in Abkhazia. I am happy that we have an opportunity to talk. The history of our common state and the people who created works of art at that time are immortal. They will continue teaching the future generations”, - said the President.
Yekaterina Peshkova’s husband Yevgeniy Barchenkov said that he has not visited Abkhazia for more than 30 years and that he is pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome.
“Please allow me to thank you for the hospitality and the warm welcome. It was especially joyful to see how kids welcomed us. After all, they are our future”, - he said.
Yekaterina Peshkova also thanked those present for the warm welcome and remarked that everyone in Abkhazia, both young and old, read, know and understand the works of Maxim Gorky.
“We are happy to be here. I am grateful to all of you”, - she remarked.
Minister of Culture and the Preservation of Historical and Cultural Heritage Elvira Arsalia said that Abkhazia joined in the large-scale celebrations of the writer’s 150th birthday. She stressed that his presence in Abkhazia has a special place in the relations between our states.
The Minister spoke about the plans to create the Maxim Gorky museum in Abkhazia.
Adviser to the President on culture, science and education Vladimir Zantaria stressed that the fact that Maxim Gorky visited Abkhazia and his works about the Republic are very much valued and loved in the state.
“We are proud of the fact that Russian writers created vast literature about Abkhazia”, - he stressed.
The Head of State remarked that we should not lose common cultural ties that have been created by our ancestors.
“Thank you for your warm attitude to our state. We are proud of the things that unite us”, - added the President.
