On December 25, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadjimba awarded the medals “Hero of Abkhazia” (posthumously) to the relatives of the veterans of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
The Head of State remarked that thousands of young men and women left Abkhazia to fight against fascism and defend not only the interests of their country but of the entire humanity.
“Unfortunately, the destiny of the people we are honouring today was such that those awards that had to be given to them during their lives were not given due to different circumstances”, - said Raul Khadjimba.
The President read out the conclusions of the lists for the award of the highest governmental award of the USSR, the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union, which were received from the archives of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation.
“I am proud that I had this opportunity. Today we have done everything for the historical justice to triumph. No one should be forgotten, and the memory of these people should be passed on from generation to generation. I have no doubt that young people should be brought up on such examples”, - said Raul Khadjimba.
According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia “On the award of the title of the Hero of Abkhazia”, for achievements related to the heroic deeds in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the title of the Hero of Abkhazia has been posthumously conferred on Kiazym Agrba, Ushangi Basaria, Chika Kvarchia and Grigory Kvekveskiri.
