On March 11, President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba held a meeting with election observers to the People’s Assembly of the Republic of Abkhazia from the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia.

President of the Republic of Abkhazia Raul Khadzhimba welcomed the participants of the meeting.

“I am happy to welcome you in our republic. Events that will take place tomorrow are of interest to many. I am happy to see representatives from the Federation Council, the State Duma and representatives from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia. I hope that your presence will give us an even greater impulse for our country to develop in the direction, where it has been actively building its positions in previous years. The principles of democracy and openness were characteristic of Abkhazia not only at the current stage of state building, but also long before the advent of democracy in many other states.

I want everything that we have today to be known to many of those who surround us. Difficult economic and political processes take place in Abkhazia. I think that the measures undertaken by the West and by the United States against Russia affect us as well. Life has shown that we succeeded in resisting this pressure. Russia helps us, and this support allows us to develop our own opportunities. Today we can say with pride that our own revenue part of the budget has almost doubled.

As for the parliamentary elections, I want to repeat that we are on the way to building a democratic society. The election campaign took place openly, without any opposition from anyone. I think that all candidates had equal opportunities, and I do not doubt that tomorrow the elections will be calm, without any excesses. We do not need this. It is advantageous for us to be seen as a state that has a society, which aims to have good neighbourly relations, primarily with Russia, and with other states. It is important for us to be seen as an independent state, which is ready to build relations with everyone. This course of action will be followed”, - said Raul Khadzhimba.

Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Alexander Totoonov thanked the President for finding the time for the meeting.

“It seems to me that our participation in the elections demonstrates, first of all, the traditionally close relations that developed between Russia and the Abkhazian people in the course of history. These relations continue to exist in modern history as well, primarily due to the fact that Russia became the first country to recognise the independence of the Abkhazian state. Your young state is on a difficult path. The forthcoming elections are a demonstration of the state building processes and a manifestation of democratic principles that are invested in these processes. We are sure that the direction set by your predecessors and the choice that the Abkhazian people have made will continue to be reflected in the work of the newly elected Parliament. The Parliament has always been and will continue to remain the core of democracy of any country. If these elections are successful, it will be another evidence of democratisation”, - said Alexander Totoonov.

First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee for the Commonwealth of Independent States, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Konstantin Zatulin remarked that there is great interest in ensuring that the elections to the Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia will take place in a calm manner.

“We wish the important event which will take place tomorrow to be successful. We are interested to see it taking place in a calm manner. We hope that despite political arguments that always happen during these times, the elections in Abkhazia will be held peacefully. The most important thing is for the members of Parliament, with whom we hope to remain in contact,  to start working at once on issues which were entrusted to them by the people”, - said Konstantin Zatulin.

During the meeting, Konstantin Zatulin presented the President of the Republic of Abkhazia with a gift from the deputies of the State Duma.
