On October 11, President Raul Khadzhimba had a meeting with a delegation from Turkey.
Turkish professor, historian Ilber Ortayli remarked that he is happy to be in Caucasus after forty years. He stressed that Abkhazians always played an important role in the history and palace culture of Turkey.
“Abkhazians played an important role in the times of Sultan Abdul Hamid’s rule”, - said the historian.
Ilber Ortayli remarked that he would like to establish contacts with the Abkhazian State University.
“We could invite students from Abkhazia to a summer school”, - said Ortayli.
The President thanked Ilber Ortayli for his visit to Abkhazia. Raul Khadzhimba remarked that even though Abkhazia is a small state, it has a long and rich history. The Head of State said that historically Abkhazia was always connected to great powers like Russia and Turkey.
The President emphasised that it is important to Abkhazia to establish and strengthen relations with the Republic of Turkey.
“I believe that you, our brothers living abroad, and us are doing the same work. The meaning of this work is to strengthen our ties, and then there will be more opportunities for state-building”, - said the Head of State.
Raul Khadzhimba stressed that in Abkhazia, people appreciate the respect with which Turkey views the history and culture of Abkhazia.
At the end of the meeting, the delegation presented the President with souvenirs.
Participating in the meeting were also Chairman of the Federation of Abkhazian Cultural Centres Ahmet Hapat and our compatriot Djemile Gechba. The delegation was accompanied by the Chairman of the State Committee for Repatriation Vadim Kharazia.
