A Statement by the Press Service of the President of the Republic of Abkhazia

In the last few days in the Abkhazian society, there has been an ongoing discussion in some social media of Igor Marykhuba’s book entitled “Against the falsification of questions of Abkhazian history”. After familiarising oneself with this publication, it is not difficult to become certain that it is mostly based on rumours and speculations, rather than on deeply reasoned arguments. Instead of providing a serious academic summary and analysis of political facts and events pertaining to the modern history of Abkhazia, the book’s author often represents them in a subjective and largely biased manner. Igor Marykhuba’s fierce and unreasonable attacks against the outstanding representatives of Abkhazian intelligentsia, starting with the founder of the Abkhazian literature Dmitry Gulia, can provoke nothing but a negative response.

The author’s arbitrary and self-willed reflections and interpretations of the military and political history of Bzyb and Abzhuy Abkhazia may be perceived as provocative. They can harm the unity of our people which is the spiritual and ideological basis of our development. It should be noted that this is not the first book by this author which caused political tensions in society.

We believe that the D.I. Gulia Abkhazian Institute of Humanitarian Studies, where the author works, and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic should express their principled position towards this unacademic publication. In the future, they should not allow the publication of works that have not received appropriate feedback from the academic council and the expert community as a whole.
